Vertical Vs Horizontal Machining Center: Characteristics, Difference Between Vertical & Horizontal Machining Center

2022.1.17

CNC machining center is a high-precision machining equipment integrating automation, intelligence, compound machining and high-speed. Among them, horizontal and vertical machining centers are the most used models at present. So what are the advantages and disadvantages of their structural characteristics and technical performance? In this guide, we will make a comparison between CNC horizontal machining center and vertical machining center.

Machine Characteristics of Horizontal Machining Center

Compared with the vertical machining center, the horizontal machining center has a horizontal spindle and is usually equipped with a rotary table with automatic indexing. It generally has 3 ~ 5 motion coordinates. The common is three linear motion coordinates plus one rotary motion coordinate. After one clamping, the workpiece can complete the machining of the other four surfaces except the mounting surface and the top surface, Now the horizontal machining center has a five axis five linkage model, which can process the other five surfaces except the bottom surface, that is, the installation surface at one time.

Horizontal machining center is most suitable for adding box parts. Compared with the vertical machining center, the horizontal machining center is easy to remove chips during processing, which is beneficial to processing. Due to the good structure of the horizontal machining center, some large and complex parts can be processed. It can be said that the workpieces that cannot be processed by the vertical machining center can be processed on the horizontal machining center. Compared with vertical machining center, horizontal machining center has the disadvantages of complex structure and high price.

Machine Characteristics of Vertical Machining Center

Vertical machining center refers to the machining center whose main shaft is vertical. Its structural form is mostly fixed column, and the worktable is rectangular. Generally, ordinary models have no indexing rotation function, which is suitable for machining disc, sleeve and plate parts. It generally has three linear motion coordinate axes, and its X, y and Z axis servo is directly controlled. It is a semi closed-loop vertical machining center with large guide rail load It has the advantages of wide span, high precision, compact and reasonable structure and overall dimensions. The main shaft is driven by servo motor through synchronous belt, which can realize the one-time clamping of various disc, plate, shell, cam, mold and other complex parts, and can complete the processing of drilling, milling, boring, expanding, reaming, rigid tapping and other processes. It is suitable for the production of multi variety, medium and small batch products, and can meet the requirements of complex Machining of high precision parts. And a rotary table rotating along the horizontal axis can be installed on the workbench, which is often called the fourth rotating shaft, so as to meet the processing requirements of special parts and the processing of spiral parts.

The vertical machining center has the advantages of convenient clamping, easy operation, easy observation of machining conditions and easier debugging program, so it is widely used. However, this type of machine is limited by the height of the column and the tool change device, so it can not process too high parts. When processing the cavity or concave surface, the chip is not easy to discharge, which will damage the tool and the machined surface in serious cases, affecting the smooth progress of processing. It can be solved by installing automatic chip conveyor and oil cooler.
