Machining PVC: Polyvinyl Chloride Properties, Benefits, Applications & Machining Tips | CNCLATHING

2020.2.14

The unique Polyvinyl chloride properties make PVC a popular plastic material in CNC machining and manufacturing for various applications and needs. What are the benefits of PVC? What products are made from it based on that? Other than the plastic machining tips, Junying also offers a selection of cost-effective PVC machining services and custom PVC machined parts to exact specifications.

What is PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)?

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC or Vinyl), is a synthetic plastic polymer has the third largest production in world, comes in two basic forms: rigid and flexible. Pure polyvinyl chloride is a white, brittle solid. PVC is a material that’s chemically nonreactive, which allows it to be made into a wide range of products.

What are the Benefits of PVC? – Polyvinyl Chloride Properties

The combination of PVC properties and characteristics makes it to deliver benefits that are hard to match for many uses, especially the corrosion resistant applications.
(1)Tasteless, odorless and nontoxic
(2)High corrosion resistance
(3)High chemical resistance
(4)Low moisture absorption
(5)Excellent electrical and insulating properties
(6)Good dimensional strength and high impact strength
(7)Highly machinable, can be machined to close tolerances and finishes
(8)Fire resistance and chemical bondability
(9)Durable and light, low-cost

What is PVC Used for – PVC Applications & PVC Machined Parts Types

Rigid PVC is suitable for applications like pipe construction, doors, windows, profiles, bottles, non-food packaging, bank cards, thick sheet in corrosion resistant applications like tanks, ducts, fume hoods, and pipe, etc. While flexible PVC is more ideal for electrical cable insulation, flooring, plumbing, signage, alternatives to rubber, etc.

With CNC machining services, PVC can be made into rings, bushings, wear parts, rollers, electronic components, semiconductor parts, pads, spacers, insulators, pipe and valve components, fittings, coupling, and custom designed PVC fabricated parts.

PVC CNC Machining Tips

For improving the quality of PVC machined parts fabrication, there are many important aspects to account for.
(1) Choose right cutting tool: plastic is quite temperamental in machining, only proper tools can ensure the safety and reliability during the manufacturing process.
(2) Processing conditions: please note that its highest operating temperature is from 100+ F to 200+ F.
(3) Setup considerations: including PVC machining speeds, friction, bite angle, pressure and tooth-counts. For machining PVC, it’s better to work with lower speed and as little force as possible.
(4) Clear the chips away from the part instantly, use coolant properly.
(5) CNC milling: use either high positive or high shear geometry cutter in face milling
(6) CNC drilling: use slow to medium speed and only slight downward pressure. When drilling 1/4-inch or larger holes, choose spade bits or bits specifically for drilling plastics.
