Investment casting, also known as precision casting, is a near-net-shape casting process that involves creating a wax model or pattern, coating it with a refractory ceramic material to form a mold, melting out the wax, and then pouring molten metal into the mold to produce a casting part. Stainless steel, with its excellent melting and flowing properties, is very suitable for the investment casting process.

Types and Grades of Stainless Steel Used in Investment Casting

Stainless Steel Investment Casting Process

Wax pattern creation → Shell building → Dewaxing and firing → Metal pouring → Cooling → Post-casting processing → Quality inspection

1. Wax Pattern Creation: Microcrystalline wax blends are used to create precise patterns through high-precision injection into molds.
2. Shell Building: A ceramic shell is built layer by layer by dipping the wax pattern into a silica-based slurry, with each layer hardened before the next is applied.
3. Dewaxing and Firing: The ceramic shell is placed in a steam autoclave to remove wax, followed by firing at high temperatures to ensure mold purity.
4. Metal Pouring: Molten stainless steel is poured into the mold under vacuum conditions to minimize gas porosity, with strict temperature controls to prevent defects.
5. Cooling: The molten steel cools and solidifies within the mold, where controlled cooling influences the final casting’s quality and properties.
6. Post-Casting Processing: The ceramic shell is removed, and the casting undergoes heat treatment, surface finishing, and dimensional inspection to enhance properties and ensure specifications.
7. Quality Inspection: The casting is thoroughly inspected using non-destructive testing and dimensional measurements to ensure it meets quality standards.
